DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Nilaya was born out of the belief that aesthetics add value to our lives and that it must be warm, down-to-earth and beautiful.

SLOW LIVING

We spend 80% of our time indoors - a large chunk of this being at our homes. Stress being the norm now, our well-being is an indispensable design consideration. At Nilaya, we believe slow-living is key to fostering it. So we put in thought and time into it to ensure a real, emotional connection with the spaces we inhabit.

02 Environment Conscious.jpg

ENVIRONMENT CONSCIOUS

We are aware of the looming issue of ecological decay. While our well-being is important, it shouldn’t come at a cost to the environment as much as possible. We can choose to be mindful of what goes into making our home and integrate a sustainable lifestyle into the design. Working with local artisans and businesses also helps promote sustainable practices and reduces our carbon footprint .

04 Old and new 01.jpg

BLENDING OLD AND NEW

Nilaya believes in reviving relevant traditional knowledge. As times evolve, it is important to take stock of our past, of what we would like to carry on into our future/ Drawing upon the legacy of our ancestors and our own personal memories is important to retain a link to our tangible and intangible past.

Behind the scenes

Hello.

I'm Suja, Interior Designer but an Electronics-Engineer previously. After a brief stint as a Business Analyst at Deloitte, I joined Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology way back in 2009 following a whimsical childhood dream of becoming a designer. I graduated in 2011, having specialized in Furniture and Interior Design. Since then, I have worked with interior designers and architects in Bangalore, Kochi and Pune.

Nilaya is a journey to finding meaning and nurturing the self through one’s work.

The Nilaya logo was designed by Graphic designer Malvika Tewari and Type Designer Lipi Raval.
They do a lot of interesting work which you can check out here.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY SHOULD I HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

An interior designer can lend their trained eye to help you design and style your space/ With better resources and contacts, they can help save a lot of time that you would otherwise spend running about trying to get everything done/ An interior designer also uses a comprehensive approach so that your space does not merely look like a mish-mash of ideas you have seen done elsewhere.

HOW INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS WILL I NEED TO BE?

The client can be as involved as their interest and time would allow/ We do need inputs on your taste, but we can take care of the rest of it, if that is what you prefer.

DO WE NEED TO USE YOUR CONTRACTOR OR ARCHITECT?

This will be as per your personal preference/ If you know someone whose work you prefer, we will coordinate with them throughout the execution.

WHAT CITIES DO YOU WORK IN?

nilaya is based in Kochi, Kerala (India)/ We do take up projects in Pune and Bangalore as well/ If it is design consultation alone, we work remotely and put together design solutions for you.

HOW LONG WILL A PROJECT TAKE?

The time span of any project depends on a lot of factors - like size, design elements, availability of resources etc./ It is hard to give a standard time for completion of a project.

IS THERE A CONTRACT?

Yes, we do sign a contract before we start working on any project/ So that there is no damage to either parties, should we wish to discontinue working with each other at any point in the project, with due notice.
